  • 1,3-Butadiene is a colorless, non-corrosive gas with mild aromatic or gasoline-like odor with the boiling point of –4.4° C at atmospheric pressure and liquid density of 611 Kg/m3 at 20°C. 1,3-Butadiene is a simple conjugated diene. Butadiene is a flammable gas and has a mildly aromatic odour. Its vapour pressure is 2100 mmHg at 25 °C and the explosive limits are 2–11.5%. Butadiene is slightly soluble in water (735 mg/litre) and is soluble in a number of organic solvents including ethanol, diethyl ether, acetone, benzene, and polar and nonpolar organic solvents.
  • Butadiene is a key raw material for the manufacture of synthetic rubbers such as chloroprene rubber, nitrite rubber, polybutadiene rubber and styrene butadiene rubber. 1,3-Butadiene is recovered from a C4 cut by extractive distillation using aqueous N-Methylpyrrolidone (NMP) as solvent. Most of the world’s butadiene is produced as a co-product of ethylene, which is obtained by steam cracking of naphtha.
  • BASF butadiene extraction process is simulated in both steady-state and dynamic conditions. A typical butadiene extraction plant consists of four basic process sections; extractive distillation, conventional distillation, solvent degassing and solvent regeneration.Butadiene is used in the production of resins and plastics including butadiene rubber, styrene rubber, adiponitrile, polychloroprene, nitrile rubber, styrene butadiene latex and acrylonitrile-butadienestyrene. Sources of butadiene include cigarette smoke, motor vehicle exhaust, wood smoke and emissions from butadiene production, storage, transport and end-use.1,3-butadiene is involved in several different reactions, including addition, oxidation, and substitution reactions; however, its main use is for polymerization.
  • Butadiene is a major petrochemical commodity used in the production of tires and other products in the automobile or appliance industry. It is an important industrial chemical used as a monomer in the production of synthetic rubber.
  • Most 1,3-butadiene is used in synthetic elastomer production, and some is used in adiponitrile production, the raw material for nylon 6,6 production. Smaller amounts of butadiene are used to make nylon via the intermediate adiponitrile, other synthetic rubber materials such as chloroprene, and the solvent sulfolane. Butadiene is used in the industrial production of cyclododecatriene via a trimerization reaction.
  • Emulsion polymerized styrene-butadiene rubber is one of the most worlwide used polymers, employed in a large variety of applications which significantly contribute to our standards of living as well as in enhancing our quality of life.
  • Breathing increased lower levels of 1,3-butadiene over a short period of time can cause irritation of the eyes, nose, and throat. Breathing high levels of 1,3-butadiene for a short time can cause central nervous system damage, blurred vision, nausea (upset stomach), fatigue (tired), headache, decreased blood pressure, decrease pulse rate, and unconsciousness.
  • 1,3-Butadiene is used primarily as a monomer to manufacture many different types of polymers and copolymers and as a chemical intermediate to produce a number of important industrial chemicals.
  • Butadiene is a chemical intermediate used as a polymer component for the production of synthetic rubber such as styrene butadiene rubber (SBR) and polybutadiene rubber (PBR), which in total consume more than 54% of the global butadiene production.
  • Global demand of butadiene amounted to about 10 million tons in 2003, with growth rates similar to worldwide GDP. It is expected that Asia will be the main driver for demand of butadiene and ABS resin production rates will correspondingly grow at high rates.
