  • Synthetic detergents have similar molecular structures and properties as soap. Although the cleansing action is similar, the detergents do not react as readily with hard water ions of calcium and magnesium.
  • Product the formulation of which is specially devised to promote the development of detergency. A detergent is a formulation comprising essential constituents (surface active agents) and subsidiary constituents (builders, boosters, fillers and auxiliaries).
  • The first synthetic detergents which fall into our definition of the term seem to have been developed by the Germans in the First World War period to allow fats to be utilized for other purposes.
  • Synthetic detergents dissolve or tend to dissolve in water or other solvents. To enable them to do this, they require distinct chemical characteristics. Hydrophilic (water loving) groupings in their molecular structure, and hydrophobic (water hating) groupings, help the detergent in it’s “detergency” action.
  • The basic component of a synthetic detergent is a 'surface active agent' ('surfactant') which binds to grease and dirt and keeps it suspended in water. Other constituents include fillers to improve the free-flowing properties of powder detergents, foam stabilisers, optical brighteners, silicates, bleaches and fragrances. Phosphates or zeolites are added to control the alkalinity and soften the water. Foam stabilisers, optical brighteners and fragrances are not essential for detergent effectiveness. The formulation of the detergent depends on the application.
  • The Processing Technology includes Detergent Slurry formulation, Slurry Preparation, Detergent Spray Drying, Pneumatic Conveying Perfuming and Packing.
  • Synthetic detergents had developed in the beginning of 20th century and started making inroads into the area earlier served by washing compounds i.e. soaps made traditionally from oils/ fats and caustic soda. Since soaps have comparatively lesser washing characteristics in hard water than synthetic detergents, synthetic washing compounds have been able to occupy a significant market which was enjoyed by washing soaps earlier.
  • Synthetic detergents, being a mass consumption item have shown a dramatic growth since its inception in 1957. Presently, detergents are available to the consumers in the form of powders and cakes/bars. Bulk of the production of these items is done in the small scale sector.
  • Machinery includes Sulphonator: Stainless steel verticle and cylindrical vessel fitted within agitator with MS jacket and complete with motor, Cap 1 m3 , Chilling plant , Settling tank- MS vertical dished bottom, Lead line with agitator and motor Cap 3.5m3 , LAB feed tank: vertical cylindrical tank, MS Cap 1.0 m3 , Oleum/Acid slurry feed tank vertical cylindrical Tank Cap 2.5m3 , LAB main storage tank horizontal cylindrical Tank Cap 12m3 , Oleum/acid storage tank ms-horizontal Cylindrical tank cap 5m3 , Pumps with motor m., Misc. equipment including valvers pipelines, exhaust, weighing machines etc. and laboratory Equipment, Finished product stocks , Furniture/fixtures , Installation/electrification.
  • The major players in the Indian detergent market were HLL, P&G, Nirma and Henkel (through its joint venture with SPIC, a leading petrochemical company based in the south Indian city of Chennai).
  • Modern technology has led to the creation of synthetic detergents that have gradually replaced soaps in the laundry. The first detergents were used chiefly for hand dishwashing and fine fabric laundering. This was followed by the development of allpurpose laundry detergents introduced in the US in 1946.
  • Today, the detergent market is a highly competitive one where a myriad brands vie with each other to get the customers attention. Each brand claims to clean whiter, boasting of technologically dubious terms such as fighting granules, power pearls, etc.
  • The annual consumption of detergents in India is in the magnitude of hundreds of thousands of tones. The formal sector, with its increasing ability to influence consumers through advertisements, is rapidly expanding its market share.
