  • Sweet corn (otherwise known as Etzkorn or sweet corn, it is also known as sugar corn), is a hybridized variety of maize (Zea mays), specifically bred to increase the sugar content. Corn originated in Mesoamerica and spread to the rest of the world after European contact with the Americas in the late 1400s and early 1500s. Sweetcorn is commonly known as simply corn in the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.
  • Sweetcorn is commonly eaten as a vegetable, rather than a grain. The cobs are picked for relatively rapid distribution (or frozen in this 'soft' state) before the fruits mature into hard grains. The kernels are boiled or steamed and eaten as a side dish, sometimes with butter or salt, and are sometimes used as a pizza topping (particularly in the UK).
  • Sweetcorn provides useful amounts of vitamins A, B3 (supports metabolism, the nervous and digestive systems) and C. It also contains folic acid and fibre.Sweetcorn, a grass, is a form of the cereal crop maize (Zea mays), harvested at a young age while the kernels are tender and sweet.
  • Mauritius imports about MUR* 10 million worth of sweetcorn annually in the form of frozen or canned kernels. It is estimated that a further MUR 48 million worth could potentially be sold as fresh ears on the cob.
  • The advantage of sweetcorn is its better taste. Field corn has been bred for use as dry grain, whereas in sweetcorn emphasis has been placed on the quality of the fresh kernels. The quality parameters are the thickness of the pericarp, taste, texture, tenderness and uniformity of the kernels.
  • The production and marketing strategies for the sweet corn industry in New York could be challenging. According to the 1997 Agricultural Census, there were 1,542 New York farms reporting sweet corn production in 1997, and the average size of sweet corn production area in
New York was 43.18 acres per farm.
  • In the United States, sweet corn is produced for three distinct markets--fresh, canning, and freezing. Production within these markets is largely independent of each other.
  • The canning market is the largest in terms of total acreage and production (accounting for 37 percent of each), while the fresh market accounts for the majority (two-thirds) of total sweet corn crop value.
  • According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, the United States is the world’s leading producer of sweet corn (fresh and processing), accounting for 46 percent of output during 2002-04.
  • According to the New York Agricultural Statistics annual report, New York growers produced about 200,000 tons of sweet corn
