Project at a Glance Contents on the CD ROM
  • Spinosad is an insecticide where the active ingredient is derived from a naturally occurring soil dwelling bacterium called Saccharo-polyspora spinosa.
  • The bacteria produce compounds (metabolites) while in a fermentation broth which can be
formulated into an insecticide that combines the efficacy of a synthetic insecticide with the benefits of a biological pest control organism.
  • Spinosad is a bacterial preparation. Such preparations are allowed for use as crop protectants and growth regulators under IFOAM Basic Standard.
  • Spinosad is therefore permitted for use under IFOAM Basic Standards.
  • Spinosad is a natural product derived from the bacterium Saccharo-polyspora spinosa.
  • Spinosad DT is a mixture of spinosyn A and spinosyn D. It is used for mosquito control in potable water in containers.
  • Spinosad DT 7.48% is specified for use as a vector control agent in drinking-water sources.
  • The discovery and development of spinosad as a pesticide is significant because it takes the place of dangerous and environmentally damaging insecticides.
  • Also, less spinosad
is used per acre than standard pesticides.
  • Spinosad is approved under the Organic Foods Production Act as an organic solution for pest control on over 150 crops. It is the active ingredient in many garden insect sprays.
  • When the bacteria is concentrated and fermented, the resulting broth is is highly toxic to many insect pests. It was first used to control caterpillars that had become resistant to other organic pest control methods.
  • Spinetoram, a green chemical synthesis which retains the favorable environmental benefits of spinosad, provides an effective broad spectrum alternative to organo-phosphate pesticides for fruits and vegetables.
  • An insecticide used to control a variety of insect pests, including fruit flies, caterpillars, thrips, drywood termites and certain beetles.
  • Spinosad is the common name of a mixture of spinosyn A and spinosyn D, two molecules derived naturally from a bacteria
    through fermentation.
  • Both aerial and ground applications of spinosad bait spray may be used in fruit fly programs, depending upon the size and location of the outbreak. Aerial applications are performed with helicopters. Ground applications involve the use of backpack or those mounted on all-terrain vehicles for eradication, and hydraulic sprayers for crop
    certification in commercial.
  • It is a white crystalline solid with an identifiable chemical formula. It is soluble in water but breaks down on a leaf surface or in the soil after a few days so that it does not pose a threat to ground water.
  • Spinosad for control of western flower thrips, certain populations of western thrips in many states within the USA.
