Project at a Glance Contents on the CD ROM
  • Sorghum is a species of grass that farmers grow and cultivate for multiple purposes, primarily for grain and syrup.
  • They use the sweet sorghum variety for syrup production.
  • Dale, M81E, Sugar drip, Theis and Tracy are some of the varieties of Sorghum.
  • Farmers grow most sweet sorghum crops in states in the South and Midwest.
  • Sorghum syrup and hot biscuits are a traditional breakfast in the southern Appalachia region in the South eastern United States.
  • Sweet sorghum is a thick syrup made from juice extracted from sorghum cane.
  • Many years ago, sweet sorghum was a popular sweetener used extensively in baking and cooking.
  • Sweet sorghum syrup is extracted from cane sorghum. The juice of the cane sorghum is squeezed from the canes and then cooked carefully to produce a sweet and thick syrup.
  • Sweet sorghum syrup can replace molasses in cooking recipes in straight one-for-one replacement. To replace molasses in baking recipes, keep in mind that sweet sorghum is sweeter than molasses so less sweet sorghum might be needed.
  • To replace refined sugar with sorghum, increase sugar amount called for by one third; use this amount of sweet sorghum.
  • Up to one percent of the U.S. population (and about ˝% worldwide) is believed to have Celiac Disease, an autoimmune reaction to gluten proteins found in wheat, barley and rye. While sorghum has long been thought safe for celiacs, no clinical testing had been done until researchers in Italy made a study.
  • Compounds in sorghum called 3-Deoxyanthoxyanins (3-DXA) are present in darker-colored sorgums, and to a lesser extent in white sorghum.
  • Sorghum is usually grown as a rain-fed crop, but it is also grown under irrigation especially in some semiarid parts of the world.
  • Sorghum is drought-resistant and heat-tolerant and hence makes a very useful crop as it grows in hot and semiarid environments with 400 - 600 mm rainfall, which is even too dry for maize.
  • Sorghum is also found in temperate regions and at altitudes of up to 2,300 meters in the tropics. Furthermore, sorghum is very tolerant of soil types.
  • Planting time usually varies from September to January, depending on planting rains and soil temperature early in the season.
  • Aim for 15°C and rising. At 15°C sorghum takes 11-14 days to emerge. At 17°C it takes only 7-10 days.
  • The major applications of sorghum are animal feed, ethanol production, and production of
    starch/starch derivatives.
  • Cultivation remains an option for control of weeds between bands of herbicides and for later emerging weeds.
  • Sorghum is mainly produced in the Free State (62 %), Mpumalanga (24%), and Limpopo (8%) provinces.
  • Sorghum (Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench) is one of the main coarse cereal crops of India. India is second largest producer of sorghum in the world with production of about 10–11million t from a total area of 12 million ha.
  • In the livestock industry, USCP is developing educational materials and visiting dairies, cattle feedlots and other livestock operations, as well as feed manufacturers, to make them aware of the financial benefits of using sorghum.
