- Sodium fluoride is the
chemical compound with the formula NaF.
- This colourless solid
is the main source of the fluoride ion in diverse applications.
- NaF is less expensive
and less hygroscopic than potassium fluoride.
- The mineral form of
NaF, villiaumite, is moderately rare. It is known from plutonic
nepheline syenite rocks.
- NaF is prepared by
neutralizing waste hydrofluoric acid resulting from the production of
superphosphate fertilizer.
- Sodium fluoride is used
in laundry souring, manufacturing enamels, manufacturing coated papers,
wood preservative, foam production, opal glass, ore flotation and water
fluoridation.
- Sodium fluoride is used
as a cleaning agent, often to remove iron stains.
- NaF is a reagent for
the synthesis of fluorocarbons.
- Among other fluorides,
sodium fluoride finds use in desilylation in organic synthesis.
- Hydrofluoric acid is
quite weak and even the organic acids can decompose sodium fluoride with
the production of hydrofluoric acid.
- Fluoride salts were
used widely to enhance the strength of teeth by the formation of
fluoroapatite, a naturally occurring component of tooth enamel.
- Due to its efficacy in
caries prophylaxis and easy application, sodium fluoride (NaF) is still
used for caries prevention in the form of fluoridated drinking water,
fluoride tablets, fluoridated salt or milk.
- In the US, NaF was once
used to fluoridate drinking water but its use has been displaced by
hexafluorosilicic acid or the related sodium salt.
- Toothpaste often
contains sodium fluoride to prevent cavities.

tissues grown in the dark and under continuous illumination.
