- Propylene oxide is a
volatile, clear, colorless, extremely flammable liquid with an
ether-like odor.
- Propylene oxide is a
highly toxic flammable chemical compound. It is an epoxide having a
molecular formula C3H6O.
- Propylene oxide is
obtained through propylene hydro chlorination. It is soluble in water
and miscible with acetone, benzene, carbon tetrachloride, diethyl ether,
and ethanol.
- Propylene oxide (PPO)
is a liquid fumigant under normal temperature pressure (NTP) with a low
boiling point (35°C) and a noticeable ether odour.
- Propylene Oxide is
produced via the established chlorohydrin process, in which propylene
and chlorine react in the presence of water to form the intermediate
propylene chlorohydrin.
- The hydroperoxide
process is another costly method for producing propylene oxide (PO).
This process uses ethylbenzene with oxygen to produce an
organic-hydroperoxide.
- The hydroperoxide is
used to oxidize propylene to PO, which is then purified. This process
results in a large quantity of by-product, phenylmethylcarbinol, which
is dehydrated to styrene, another useful chemical.
- At present there are
two major industrial processes used for the synthesis of propylene
oxide: The chlorohydrin and peroxide processes.
- The new propylene oxide
cumene process is considered as one of the Green Processes since it
gives higher yields then the conventional processes with only small
amont of by products produced.
- In previous year, about
half of the world production was through chlorohydrin technology, one
third from PO/SM technology, and the other from PO/TBA technology. The
above technologies create additional side products.
- Propylene oxide is also
used in the production of propylene glycol, polypropylene glycol,
propylene glycols ethers and propylene carbonate.
- Its major industrial
application is as a monomer for the production of polyether polyols for
use in making polyurethane plastics.
- Propylene oxide may be
used in fumigation chambers for the sterilization of packaged foods and
as a pesticide.
- Propylene oxide is a
key raw material for various kinds of products such as polypropylene
glycol, propylene glycol, and surfactants, which have a broad range of
applications including polyurethane foams, elastomers, paints,
adhesives, and unsaturated polyesters.
- Propylene oxide is used
primarily as a building block for the manufacture of a versatile range
of derivative products.
- Propylene oxide (Po) is
normally used in the gaseous form to prevent microbial spoilage in food
products.
- Propylene oxide (PPO)
is a registered fumigant in the US for reduction of bacteria, yeasts,
and mold on raw nut meats, etc., and PPO fumigation has been used by the
nut industry for insect and microbial control for decades.
- The total production
capacity of propylene oxide in Japan is approximately 350 thousand tons
at present, including the 170 thousand tons of Nihon Oxirane.
- There are a number of
known technologies to produce propylene oxide but Shell chemicals
companies and their joint ventures employ the Shell proprietary SM/PO
technology.
- During the past 10
years, propylene oxide grew at a nearly 4 percent annual rate. Propylene
oxides's growth should moderate to about 3 percent in the present decade
because most of its applications are maturing.
- Commercial production
is from propylene and chlorine in a chlorohydrin process, or from
peroxidation of propylene and another petrochemical reactant that
results in PO plus an additional co-product.
- Propylene oxide is a
major industrial product with production of more than 6 million tons per
year world wide. Approximately 70% of it is used as polypropylene glycol
in the raw materials for urethane, and the remainder is used as
propylene glycol in the raw materials for unsaturated polyesters, food
product additives and cosmetics.
