Project at a Glance Contents on the CD ROM
  • Isobutyric Acid is a clear, colorless liquid with an obnoxious, penetrating odor.
  • Isobutyric acid, also known as 2-methylpropanoic acid, is a carboxylic acid with structural formula (CH3)2-CH-COOH. It is found in the free state in carobs (Ceratonia siliqua) and in the root of Arnica dulcis, and as an ethyl ester in croton oil.
  • Isobutyric acid may be artificially prepared by the hydrolysis of isobutyronitrile with alkalis, by the oxidation of isobutanol with potassium dichromate and sulfuric acid, or by the action of sodium amalgam on methacrylic acid.
Isobutyric acid can also be manufactured commercially using engineered bacteria using a sugar feedstock.
  • n-Butyric acid is a saturated four-carbon carboxylic acid which is a clear liquid, with a suffocating odor and with melting point -6 C and boiling point 164 C.
  • It is used to eliminate calcium in leather industry. Butyric acid family products, such as their esters, are used for the production of plastics, plasticizers, surfactants and textile auxiliaries.
They are used in food additives, flavorings, varnishes, perfumes, pharmaceuticals and disinfectants. Aminobutyric acid is a four-carbon carboxylic acid, to which an amino group is attached.
  • The branched chain volatile fatty acid such as isobutyric , 2 - methyl butyric and isovaleric are considered as essential nutrients for many predominant rumen cellulolytic bacteria and either can be used to meet their requirements.
  • Isobutyric acid is an isomer of n-butyric acid, is used in the creation and/or manufacturing of fragrance.
  • It has unlimited miscibility with most organic solvents and, at above 26oC, also with water. It is stable under recommended storage conditions.
  • Butyric acid has several potential applications in industry. Its applications in the foodstuffs and beverage industries are widespread.
  • It may be used as the pure acid in the dairy industry, or in the form of esters as a food additive to increase fruit fragrance. Furthermore, butyric acid could also have some important physiological functions.
  • The decreasing supply of world crude oil, the increasing amounts of food industry by-products, and the increasing consumer demand for organic natural products in food additives, pharmaceutical products, and preservatives, the production of butyric acid by microbial fermentation is becoming economically attractive
