- Cellulose acetate (also known as
zyl or zylonite), first prepared in 1865, is the acetate ester of
cellulose.
- Cellulose acetate is the generic
term used to describe a variety of acetylated cellulose
polymers.
- These include cellulose diacetate,
cellulose triacetate and the mixed esters of
cellulose acetate propionate and cellulose acetate butyrate.
- Cellulose acetate is used as a
film base in photography, as a component in some adhesives, and as a
frame material for eyeglasses.
- It is also used as a synthetic
fiber and in the manufacture of cigarette filters and playing cards.
- The original cellulose acetate
membrane, developed in the late 1950's by Loeb and Sourirajan, was
made from cellulose diacetate polymer.
- Current CA membrane is usually
made from a blend of cellulose diacetate and triacetate.
- The membrane is formed by casting
a thin film acetone-based solution of cellulose acetate polymer with
swelling additives onto a non-woven polyester fabric.
- Cellulose Acetate Granules are a

applications.
- These properties include High

strength, High dielectric constant, Excellent machineability, Good
resistance to a variety of chemicals, Compatibility with human skin

- Cellulose Acetate is chemically
effected by alcohols, aromatic hydrocarbons or solvents with
chlorine, nitro benzene, or similar aromatic solvents.
- It will expand and lose
plastification in contact with them.
- Soluble in acetone, esters,
acids, strong mineral bases
Chemically degrades with oxidizing salts.
