  • Anthraquinone is an organic compound whose structure serves as a basic building block for a number of naturally occurring plant pigments. The compound is used in the production of dyes and as a catalyst for the production of wood pulp.
  • Anthraquinone is a light yellow to green crystalline ( sand-like) substance. It is used in the manufacture of dyes and paper, as a medication, and as a bird repellent for seeds.
  • 9,10-Anthraquinone is obtained industrially by the oxidation of anthracene, a reaction that is localized at the central ring.
  • 9,10-Anthraquinone is used as a digester additive in production of paper pulp by alkaline processes, like the Kraft, the alkaline sulfite or heSoda-AQ processes. The anthraquinone is a redox catalyst.

  • Anthraquinone dyes and pigments have been employed as chromogens for many applications where colorants are required. Furthermore, it is
    known to make many derivatives of anthraquinones for specific colorant applications.
  • Anthraquinone, a naturally occurring chemical found in many species of plants, also appears to meet the requirements for an effective bird repellent on rice seed. Anthraquinone was tested extensively as a seed treatment for forestry applications and as a seed treatment on rice but was never registered as a bird repellent in the United States.
