- Salt is necessary for the survival of all
living creatures, including humans.Salt is involved in regulating the
water content (fluid balance) of the body.
- Salt cravings may be caused by trace
mineral deficiencies as well as by a deficiency of sodium chloride
itself.
- Salt is required for life, but
overconsumption can increase the risk of health problems, including high
blood pressure, in those individuals who are genetically predisposed to
hypertension.
- In food preparation, salt is used as a
preservative and as a seasoning.
- Refined salt, that is nowadays most widely
used, is mainly sodium chloride. Only about 7% of refined salt is used
as a food additive.
- Salt is most commonly fluoridated at 250
parts per million (ppm) (range 200 - 350ppm) which means 2,5 mg
of fluoride for every 10 grams of salt.
- The main objective of any salt iodization
program is to ensure that salt contains the recommended amount of iodine
at the time of consumption
- Iodized salt should be packed in airtight
bags of either high density polyethylene (HDPE) or polypropylene (PP)
(laminated or non-laminated) or LDPE-lined jute bags (Grade 1803 DW jute
bags lined with 150 gauge polyethylene sheet).
- Salt in most countries is produced by many
small manufacturers and a few medium or large ones, and is transported
by all available modes, including road, rail, sea, and river. The bags
must be protected from moisture, dust and heat in transport.
- Companies can supply complete plant for salt
refining and drying to produce iodised, free flowing salt from crude
salt.
- The crude salt costs Rs.300-400 (US$ 7-8)
per Ton and after refining and packing the salt is sold at Rs.4.00 to
Rs.5.00 (US$ 0.1) per kg.
- This is a very profitable project, but it
needs a relatively bigger initial investment. The recovery from crude
salt to free flowing salt is nearly 85-90%.
