- Plastics are an essential
part to our daily life. For instance, without plastics, 400 percent more
material by weight, and 200 percent more material by volume would be
needed to make packaging.
- Plastics can be divided into
two major categories: thermoplastics and thermosets. Thermoplastics can
be remelted and reformed many times into different shapes. For this
reason, they are the most commonly recycled plastics. Thermosets can
only be formed once. After that, they
may be ground and used as
filler for future plastic products.
- Material recycling is a term
used to describe processes in which the macromolecular structure is kept
basically intact, and the material is reformed into a new product. Some
alteration of the molecular structure and/or morphology of the material
may be made for the purpose of enhancing performance.
- The process of taking
plastic scraps or plastic waste and recovering the material for use in
manufacturing is plastic recycling. Melting down polyester soft drink
bottles and spinning the melted polymer into fibers is a common example
of plastic recycling.
- The actual recycling of
plastic scraps is a straightforward process. The plastic bales are
broken apart and ground into small flakes. Depending upon the type of
plastic material being recycled, these flakes undergo a process in which
the containments are sorted from the actual plastic flakes.
- Recycled plastics used in
electronic applications such as computer and printer housings. The
plastics used in electronic applications are polymers such as
acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS), polycarbonate (PC) and their
blends, and these are relatively expensive polymers.
- This includes polyethylene
bin liners and carrier bags; PVC sewer pipes, flooring and window
frames; building insulation board; video and compact disc cassette
cases; fencing and garden furniture; water butts, garden sheds and
composters; seed trays; anoraks and fleeces; fibre filling for sleeping
bags and duvets; and a variety of office accessories.
- Plastic lumber, a product
made from recycled plastic, is ideal for use in landscaping
applications.By using plastic lumber, landscapers can create
cost-effective, high quality, and environmentally beneficial
projects.
- Recycling plastic scrap and
plastic pop bottles has become an increasingly large market of its own.
With post consumer items made from PET and HDPE resins finding reliable
markets within the United States and Asia, recycling plastic isn't just
environmentally friendly anymore, it’s become a nice source of revenue
for several businesses.
- The recycling of plastics
continued to grow in 1997. More than 1.3 billion pounds of post-consumer
plastics packaging were recycled in the United States.
- Advanced recycling of
plastics represents a significant technological advancement that in the
case of some polymers is already supplementing existing mechanical
recycling processes. These processes signal a significant technical
advancement in plastics recycling because the products, after
purification, are identical to current feedstocks and monomers used to
produce new plastics.
