  • Dithiocarbamate fungicides are widely used in Australian agriculture. They are multisite contact fungicides that work by protecting the plant surface to prevent infection. Dithiocarbamates belong to the fungicide mode of action group Y. 
  • Dithiocarbamates and derivates of them make extra high vulcanisation speeds possible and are accordingly known as ultra-accelerators. They cause little or no delay. Ziram is the zinc salt of dimethyldithiocarbamate. It is produced by a reaction between dimethylamine and carbon disulphide in the presence of a base or surplus amine. Ziram is used as an accelerator for natural rubber and synthetic rubber.
  • Thiuram monosulphides are also derivates of dithiocarbamates. One way of making them is by reacting the sodium dithiocarbamate salt with phosgene. Accelerators of this kind entail less risk of scorching than the disulphides but also give rapid vulcanisation. Sodium dimethyl dithiocarbamate can be oxidated to tetramethylthiuramdisulphide which is one of the commonest ultra-accelerators. The tetra- alkylthiuramdisulphides are also an important group of accelerators. 
  • The other names of ziram are Zinc Bisdimethyldithiocarbamate; Carbazinc; Bis(Dimethylcarbamodithioato-s,S')Zinc; Bis- dimethyl dithiocarbamate De Zinc (French); Bis(Dimethyldithiocarbamato) Zinc; Bis(N,N-dimetil-ditiocarbammato) Di Zinco (Italian); Tsiram (Russian); Zinc Dimethyldithiocarbamate; 
  • Ziram (zinc dithiocarbamate) is used in industry as an accelerating agent in the production of latex. In agriculture ziram is used to protect various fruits and vegetables from fungal infection. Ziram has the ability to inhibit NK cytotoxic function at various concentrations and found that cytotoxic function was diminished by greater than 90% after a 48 h exposure to 2.5 uM ziram and by about 50% after a 48 h exposure to as low as 0.25 uM.
  • Ziram residue levels in the juice were about 10% of those in the apples, while levels in the wet pomace were slightly higher than in the apples. Levels in dry pomace were 30-40% higher than in the wet pomace. Much of the ziram residues must be lost during the drying process because dry pomace is 20-25% by weight of wet pomace. 
  • In 2003, the value of the global market for conventional chemical crop protection products or pesticides  increased by 6.2% to reach US$26,710 million. The world market has expanded from US$23,170 million in 1990. The 27 large and medium-sized research-based agrochemical companies that existed in 1983 declined to 8 in 2003—Syngenta, Monsanto, DuPont, BASF, Bayer, Dow AgroSciences, Sumitomo, and FMC. The six largest multinational agrochemical corporations account for about 85% of the total annual worldwide pesticide sales.
