- A Stent is an artificial 'tube'
inserted into a natural passage/conduit in the body to prevent, or
counteract, a disease-induced, localized flow constriction.
- The term may also refer to a tube
used to temporarily hold such a natural conduit open to allow access
for surgery.
- The most widely known stent use
is in the coronary arteries with a bare-metal stent, a drug-eluting
stent or occasionally a covered stent.
- Coronary stents are placed during
a percutaneous coronary intervention procedure, also known as an
angioplasty.
- Ureteral stents are used to
ensure the patency of a ureter, which may be compromised, for
example, by a kidney stone.
- This method is sometimes used as
a temporary measure, to prevent damage to a blocked kidney, until a
procedure to remove the stone can be performed.
- A urethral or Prostatic stent
might be needed if a man is unable to urinate.
- Often this situation occurs when
an enlarged prostate pushes against the urethra, blocking the flow
of urine.
- With the help of a few shrewd
acquisitions, Opto today generates 95 percent of its Rs. 800-plus
crore revenue outside India.
- And in a year when most of his
peers struggled to maintain their revenue and profits, grew both at
roughly 75 percent and 60 percent respectively.
- Opto currently makes slightly
over 20 percent of its money selling stents and balloons in Europe
and Asia.
- Angioplasty can improve some of
the symptoms of CAD, such as angina (chest pain) and shortness of
breath.
- It also can reduce damage to the
heart muscle from a heart attack and reduce the risk of death in
some patients.
- Angioplasty is a common medical
procedure and is generally safe, but there is a small risk of
serious complications.
- The use of medicine-coated stents
can lower the chance of this happening, but these stents aren't
without risk.
- In some cases, blood clots can
form in the medicine-coated stents.
