  • Salicylic acid is the chemical compound with the formula C6H4(OH)CO2H, where the OH group is adjacent to the carboxyl group. This colorless crystalline organic acid is widely used in organic synthesis and functions as a plant hormone. It is probably best known as a compound that is chemically similar but not identical to the active component of aspirin. The name derives from the Latin word for the willow tree (Salix), from whose bark it can be obtained.
  • Salicylic acid crystallizes in small colorless needles which melt at 1 55° C. It is sparingly soluble in cold water, but readily dissolves in hot. It sublimes, but on rapid heating decomposes into carbon dioxide and phenol. Ferric chloride colours its aqueous solution violet. Potassium bichromate and sulphuric acid oxidize it to carbon dioxide and water; and potassium chlorate and hydrochloric acid to chloranil. On boiling with concentrated nitric acid it yields picric acid. When heated with resorcin to 200° C. it gives trioxybenzophenone.
  • Salicylic acid is a white crystalline compound, which can be isolated from the bark of birch trees. Since it is a valuable substance that can be isolated from nature, it is called a useful "natural product". Although it was used historically as an analgesic (pain reliever), today it is commonly used in ointments and plasters for the removal of warts from the skin. Acetylsalicylic acid (an ester derivative) is much more commonly used than salicylic acid itself for pain relief, because the parent compound can be rather irritating to your stomach linings. Acetylsalicylic acid is marketed as aspirin.
  • Methyl salicylate, like salicylic acid, is produced by many plants. It was first isolated from wintergreen leaves, Gaultheria procumbens, and is often called oil of wintergreen.Methyl salicylate is similar to acetylsalicylic acid in that it masks one of the acidic hydrogens in salicylic acid. Methyl salicylate replaces the carboxylic acid hydrogen with a methyl group, -CH3. The result is a relatively unreactive compound that does not liberate salicylic acid efficiently in the body. Consequently, methyl salicylate is not an effective analgesic.
  • Salicylic acid is used to treat acne, warts, dandruff, psoriasis, and similar conditions. In the treatment of acne, it slows the shedding of skin cells in hair follicles, so they do not clog the pores and cause pimples. It also has a keratolytic effect, causing dead cells to slough off. The top layer of skin is removed, and pores unclogged. In treatments for warts, a stronger solution is used. This not only softens the wart so it can be rubbed off, but the irritation stimulates the immune system to attack the human papillomavirus that causes warts.
  • Salicylic acid is used externally for the removal of corns and similar epidermic thickenings. It causes some pain, so that a sedative should be added. A common formula has i 1 parts of the acid, 3 of extract of Indian hemp, and 86 of collodion. There is probably no better remedy for corns. Perspiration of the feet cannot be attacked locally with more success than by a powder consisting of salicylic acid, starch and chalk. These drugs are specific for acute rheumatism.
  • Salicylic acid is used in medicine largely in combination with the alkaline bases, through its action on the neutral salts of these substances, because of their superior solubility. Salicylic acid is specifically a remedy for rheumatism. It is used to best advantage in the acute and sub-acute forms, but will serve an excellent purpose in the chronic forms of whatever character. It is now given in the form of its soluble salts. Relapses are, however, more liable to occur after this agent than after almost any other remedy.
  • According to market analyst, Mintel, the UK functional food market was worth an estimated £1.1bn (€1.6bn) in 2005, having grown 143 per cent since the start of the new millennium. The potential health benefits of herbs and spices have been consistently researched, with studies of the anti-cancer effects of turmeric from curcumin, and capsaicin from red chilli pepper spending significant time in the spotlight recently. The health benefits of salicylic acid are not in question because the compound is the metabolite of acetylsaliclylic acid, more commonly known as aspirin. Recent reports have reported that a daily dose of 75-80 mg of aspirin may halve the risk of colorectal cancer.
