  • Psilocybin (also known as psilocybine) is a psychedelic indole of the tryptamine family, found in psilocybin mushrooms.
  • Psilocybin is a hallucinogenic substance obtained from certain types of mushrooms that are indigenous to tropical and subtropical regions of South America, Mexico, and the United States.
  • Psilocybin is a prodrug that is converted into the pharmacologically active compound psilocin in the body by dephosphorylation.
  • “Magic mushrooms” is the name most commonly given
to hallucinogenic fungi containing the psychoactive constituents psilocin and psilocybin , the principal
    active constituents of Psilocybe mushrooms.
  • The use of “magic mushrooms” has become popular among young people because it is relatively inexpensive, and there is lower awareness of guilt than
    with other drugs.
  • Psilocybin is produced synthetically or extracted from the psilocybe mexicana mushroom and other mushroom species.
  • Gas chromatography in combination with mass spectrometry detection was applied for the qualitative and quantitative determination. Enzymatic hydrolysis is necessary to convert psilocybin into psilocin.
  • Psilocin extracted by An Aqueous-Organic Extraction Method is sufficiently concentrated and free of co-contaminants to allow
identification by infrared spectroscopy and gas chromatography/mass spectrometry.
  • The increasing worldwide
popularity of psilocybin-containing mushrooms as recreational drugs also points to the need for more research
    with psilocybin.
