- Magnesium oxide, or
magnesia, is a white solid mineral that occurs naturally as periclase
and is a source of magnesium. See also oxide. It has an empirical
formula of MgO. It is formed by an ionic bond between one magnesium and
one oxygen atom.
- The majority of
magnesium oxide produced today is obtained from the processing of
naturally occurring minerals such as magnesite (magnesium carbonate),
magnesium chloride rich brine, and seawater.
- Sources include Sea
water and lake brine , Carnalite , Dolomite , Serpentine Magnesite
.
- The total energy
required to produce one tonne of magnesium is around 35 to 40 MWhour for
both the electrolytic and thermal routes. The electrolysis only step
component ranges down to just 12 MWhour per tonne with the latest
technology with the balance being thermal energy including that required
for the production of lime, drying and billet production. The thermal
reduction processes as described below requires a higher proportion of
electrical energy with approximately the same amount of energy. The
electrolytic route will benefit from integration with a petchem project
that could consume the chlorine by-product.
- Three basic types or
grades of "burned" magnesium oxide can be obtained from the calcination
step with the differences between each grade related to the degree of
reactivity remaining after being exposed to a range of extremely high
temperatures.
- Magnesium oxide is used
as a basic refractory material for lining crucibles, principal
ingredient in construction materials , optical material, electrical
heating industry., animal feeding industry , magnesium
supplement.
- Industrial Uses of
Magnesium Oxide includes Abrasives, Animal feed supplement, Boiler
(oil-fired) additives, Boiler feedwater treatment, Chemicals, Coatings,
Construction, Electrical, Fertilizers, Foundries, Glass manufacture,
Insulation, Lubricating oils, Pharmaceuticals, Plastics manufacture,
Refractory and ceramics, Rubber compounding, Steel industry, Sugar
refining, Sulfite wood pulping, Uranium, gallium and boron processing,
Wastewater treatment.
- In the United States
and Europe, the largest captive end use for magnesium chloride is in the
production of magnesium metal. The largest merchant end uses for
magnesium chloride are for dust control and deicing.
- China is the largest
producer of magnesium oxide from natural magnesite, accounting for more
than one-third of the magnesium oxide produced in 2006. Large mineral
deposits of magnesite are located in China, the Democratic People’s
Republic of Korea and Russia.
- In 2006, these
countries accounted for over 50% of global magnesite production. China’s
abundant magnesite deposits result in most of its domestic producers’
manufacturing magnesium chemicals from this natural ore. Most companies
produce refractory or fused magnesia from local magnesite.
- The largest end use for
magnesium hydroxide is in wastewater treatment and flue gas
desulfurization. Ease of handling, increasing environmental markets and
the high price level of caustic soda have spurred demand in these
applications over the past five years. This trend is expected to
continue during the forecast period 2006–2011.
- The majority of the
magnesium oxide produced worldwide is consumed as refractory magnesia.
The primary use of refractory magnesia is in furnace linings in the iron
and steel industry.
- Current world
consumption of magnesium metal and magnesium alloys is in excess of
450,000 tonne per annum. Market projections indicate that consumption
will increase rapidly to over 500,000 tonne per annum.
- The anticipated market
requirement for these specialist alloys is such that some of the less
economically viable producers of low grade magnesium metal and magnesium
alloys will be forced to either upgrade their production techniques or
terminate production.
- Of the various
applications of magnesium and its alloys, die casting is the fastest
growing sector of magnesium consumption. For example, die casting
applications specific for the automotive industry are expected to
increase by about 8 – 10% per annum over the next decade. 2006 estimates
are 175,000 metric tonnes.
