Man-made mineral fibres , most of which are referred to as man-made vitreous fibres , are amorphous silicates
manufactured from glass, rock, or other minerals, which can be classified into four broad groups: continuous filament,
insulation wool (including rock/slag wool, and glass wool), refractory (including ceramic fibre), and special purpose fibres.
Glass Fiber is a material fabricated from extremely fine fibers of glass and is used in a variety of applications ranging from manufacture of insulation and textiles to reinforcing agent for several plastic products
Glass fibers can be made for specific applications such as electrical grade (type E), used as electrical insulation tape, textiles and reinforcement; chemical grade (type C), which has superior acid resistance, and for thermal insulation (type T).
Fibrous glass accounts for approximately 80% of Man Made Mineral Fibers production in the USA, 80% of which is glass wool, mainly used in acoustic or thermal insulation.
Approximately 100 to 150 cubic meters of glass wool can be made from one cubic meter of Glass
Global market for glass wool is projected to reach 6.4 million valued at US$14.1 billion) metric tons by 2016 from an estimated 5.1 million metric tons in 2012, growing by a CAGR of 5.9% between 2012 and 2016.
