  • Fullers earth is a natural product and is made of several components (aluminum silicates, clay-like...). Multani is used as a synonym. The composition depends to a certain extent on the location where the material was found.
  • Natural Fullers earth & Attapulgite clays are naturally active alkaline clays having inherent ion exchange capacity along with high surface area, these clays naturally possess good adsorption capacity.
  • High adsorptive capacity, large surface area, high ion exchange capability –
these are repeatedly the special properties required
  • The clay product, which is used to decolorize the oil and remove the pollutants, is called Activated
Bleaching Earth. It comprises of attapulgite, bentonite, and montmorillonite materials. The
bleaching clay or fuller’s earth are the other names for Activated Bleaching Earth. It is mainly used
for improving the quality of oil by removing impurities, traces of metal, and maintaining minimal oil retention.
  • Bleaching earths are used mainly for bleaching oils and fats. In India,
thry are used chiefly in the manufacture of edible oil products, such as
refined oils, Vansapathi and margarine and are also employed for treatment of fatty raw materials in the manufacture of such products as soaps, toilet preparations and paints.
  • The two main classes of bleaching earths encountered in commerce are
neutral or acidic. Formerly, bleaching earths were not subjected to special
chemical treatment before use but the improved performance of earths
which have been activated with acids or other chemicals has led to their
    predominant use in many fields.
  • Formerly, all the bleaching earths used in this country were imported
principally from Britain and Germany. Indigenous production of bleaching
earths is now firmly established but certain grades, especially suited for
dark-coloured oils that are difficult to bleach, are still being imported
    though in very small quantities.
  • Acid activated clays are special surface modified clays, these clays are usually activated using Strong Acid & alkalis.
This process enhances the clay’s surface area & adsorption capacity to several folds.
