- The main deposits of fluorspar are now to be found in
China, Mexico, Mongolia, South Africa and Namibia. Europe still has a
small number of viable fluorspar mines, although the total has declined
gradually over the years. It is a truly international business with
worldwide consumption estimated at around 4.5 million tonnes per year.
- The most demanded is the acid grade, used as raw
material to produce hydrofluoric acid, its worldwide production capacity
being more than three million metric tonnes.
- After the ore is dug from mines or from open
quarries, impurities are removed to leave a fluorspar which contains a
minimum of 97% calcium fluoride. Most of the co-products are also
separated and collected, to serve a variety of industrial purposes. The
acid grade fluorspar is then transported to the hydrofluoric acid plants
by ship, road, rail or barge.

from $500-540 per tonne the previous month
- Canada Fluorspar Inc (CFI) the most recent entrant to
the market, has
capacity for 180,000 tonnes per year of acidspar.
- Mongolczechmetal is developing an acidspar-only plant
with nameplate capacity of 40,000 tonnes per year that is scheduled to
start up in September

- Mongolia exported fluorspar to two countries - Russia
and China – in 2018. Russia received less than 200,000 tonnes, meaning
that China accounted for around two-thirds of Mongolia’s output.
- Acidspar accounted for 164,000 tonnes of the 2018
total, up from 69,400 tonnes in 2017 and 46,800 tonnes in 2016.
- Overall, production of fluorocarbons is estimated to
have consumed approximately 1Mt of HF in 2018, requiring >2Mt of
acidspar.
- Chinese fluorspar spot prices for both metspar and
acidspar have reached multi-year highs in 2018 and 2019, with
lower-grade metspar sometimes bizarrely costing more than >97% purity
