  • Dimethyl ether, also known as methoxymethane, oxybismethane, methyl ether, wood ether, and DME.
  • It is a colorless gaseous ether with an ethereal odor. Dimethyl ether gas is water soluble.
  • It has the formula CH3OCH3 or as its empirical formula C2H6O (which it shares with ethanol).
  • DME is miscible with most organic solvents and it has a high solubility in water.
  • DME is easily liquefied under light pressure. Its physical properties are similar to those of propane and butane, which are the principal constituents of LP Gas. DME can be distributed and stored by using LP Gas handling technology.
  • Conventional DME production uses the methanol dehydration method.
  • DME can be produced from methanol by combining two methanol molecules to produce a DME molecule and a water molecule.
  • DME production from solid raw materials such as biomass and coal requires more processes than DME production from gases such as NG and LPG. This is because the solid materials need go through the gasification process to produce the syngas required for the DME-synthesis.
  • DME can be produced from syngas, which in turn is formed from natural gas, coal or biomass.
  • Catalytic dehydration of methanol over an acidic catalyst offers a potential method for the production of DME, a new spray propellant.
  • DME is now manufactured by two processes, which are methanol synthesis and methanol dehydration process. In order to use DME as a fuel, it must be produced at low cost in large quantities.
  • The prodcution of high purity dimethyl ether has gained increasing importance, mainly due to its use as an environmentally superior aerosal propellant and clean fuel.
  • Dimethyl ether (DME) is a useful chemical intermediate for the preparation of many important chemicals, such as dimethyl sulfate and high-value oxygenated compounds.
  • Dimethyl Ether has found commercial use as a refrigerant. It has as a solvent, as an extraction agent, a propellant in aerosols, and fuel in welding cutting and brazing. Readily form complexes with inorganic compounds, e.g., boron trifluoride. It is an excellent methylating agent in the dye industry.
  • An innovative process of direct synthesis of DME from synthesis gas has been developed. Newly developed catalyst in a slurry phase reactor gave a high conversion and high selectivity of DME.
  • Dimethyl ether (DME) would be an innovative clean fuel, as its properties are similar to those of LPG (liquid petroleum gas). Nowadays, DME is used mainly as a propellant for spray cans.
  • Approximately 150,000 tons/year are produced worldwide by a dehydration reaction of methanol. In order to use DME as a fuel, it must be produced at low cost in large quantities.
  • DME is produced from coal derived gas and used for various consumption sectors, clean energy supply restriction and environmental problems could be mitigated in future.
  • DME production capacity in China needs to exceed 11 million mt for use as a domestic fuel by 2012 to be cost effective in the
    domestic fuels market. The capacity is expected to reach 9,437,000 mt by 2012 in China.
  • The future development of the market for DME as a fuel for power production or automotive transportation will require much larger quantities of DME at a much lower cost.
