Diethyl sulfate is a highly toxic and likely carcinogenic chemical compound with formula (C2H5)2SO4. Diethyl sulfate occurs as a colorless liquid with a peppermint odor. Diethyl sulfate (DES) is an important chemical intermediate to make products for coatings, pharmaceuticals, personal care products, detergents and textiles. Diethyl sulfate decomposes into ethyl hydrogen sulfate and alcohol upon heating or in hot water. A method for measuring dimethyl sulphate (DIMS) and diethyl sulphate (DES) in air was evaluated, which involves sampling onto sorbent tubes containing Tenax TA, followed by thermal desorption and analysis by Gas Chromatography- Mass Spectrometry.
