  • Cumene is the common name for isopropylbenzene, an organic compound that is an aromatic hydrocarbon.
  • It is a constituent of crude oil and refined fuels. It is a flammable colorless liquid that has a boiling point of 152 °C.
  • Cumene is a colorless, flammable liquid that has a sharp, penetrating, gasoline-type odor. Cumene is insoluble.
  • Commercial production of cumene is carried out through the catalytic alkylation of benzene, with the addition of propylene. Solid phosphoric acid (SPA) supported on alumina can also be used as a catalyst.
  • Most of the current cumene plant production processes utilize a patented supported phosphoric acid catalyst, with a few using a Friedel-Crafts reaction with aluminum trichloride.
  • Benzene and propylene are compressed together to a pressure of 30 standard atmospheres at 250 °C (482° F) in presence of a catalytic Lewis acid. Phosphoric acid is often favored over aluminum halides. Cumene is formed in the gas-phase Friedel-Crafts alkylation of benzene by propylene.
  • Cumene is oxidized in slightly basic conditions in presence of a radical initiator, which removes the tertiary benzylic hydrogen from cumene and hence forms a cumene radical.
  • Cumene is used to manufacture other chemicals such as phenol, acetone, acetophenone, and methyl styrene.
  • It is used as a thinner in paints, lacquers, and enamels. It is a component of high octane motor fuels.
  • Cumene in used in the manufacture of rubber, iron and steel, and pulp and paper.Modern phenol technology involves oxidation of cumene with air at high efficiency to produce cumene hydroperoxide (CHP).
  • A high efficiency oxidation system has been developed which improves yield by lowering the formation of byproducts. An advanced cleavage system produces improved selectivity of phenol from CHP.
  • Modern process technology is based on the reaction of propylene and benzene either in the liquid or gas phases. These processes initially used solid phosphoric acid or aluminium chloride catalysts but in recent years there has been a shift to using zeolite catalysts.
  • Cumene is the main feedstock for phenol/acetone production and demand is driven by market growth for the derivatives of phenol and acetone such as bis-phenol A, phenolic resins and caprolactam.
  • Global cumene demand grew by over 5%/year. Cumene demand growth is expected to be slightly below phenol’s growth rate of just over 4%/year in the 2006-2011 period.
  • Around 98% of cumene is used to produce phenol and its co-product acetone. However, the outlook for cumene is largely dependent on the performance of phenol’s derivatives which have resulted in healthy growth rates for cumene.
