- Compressed Natural Gas
(CNG) is a substitute for gasoline (petrol) or diesel fuel. It is
considered to be an environmentally "clean" alternative to those fuels.
It is made by compressing natural gas (which is mainly composed by
methane (CH4), in a percantage range of 70% to 98%). It is stored and
distributed in hard containers, at a normal pressure of 200/220bars,
usually in cylindric of spherical shapes to maintain equal pressure on
the walls of the containers.
- CNG is basically
produced by pressing natural gas at 3,000 psi pressure. Compressed
Natural Gas (CNG) is usually produced on the fueling station site with a
compressor based system. Natural gas is transported through pipelines to
refueling stations and there compressed at a pressure of 3,000 psi with
the help of specially installed compressors that enables it to be loaded
as gas cylinders for vehicles.
- CNG cylinders can be
made of steel, aluminium, or plastic. Lightweight composite
(fibre-wrapped plastic) cylinders are especially beneficial for
vehicular use because they offer significant weight reductions when
compared with earlier generation steel and aluminium cylinders, which
leads to lower fuel consumption.
- The cylinder is used to
store CNG at a working pressure of 200 bar. It is fitted with a shut-off
valve and a safety burst disc. The cylinders are type approved by the
Chief Controller of Explosives, Government of India.

- The CNG market is more
stable than the gasoline market. CNG generally costs 15 to 40 percent
less than gasoline or diesel. CNG requires more frequent refueling,
however, because it contains only about a quarter of the energy by
volume of gasoline. In addition, CNG vehicles cost between $3,500 to
$6,000 more than their gasoline-powered counterparts. This is primarily
due to the higher cost of the fuel cylinders. As the popularity and
production of CNG vehicles increases, vehicle costs are expected to
decrease.
- Everest Kanto Cylinder
is the only other listed player in the business of manufacturing
cylinders, having a market share of more than 80%.
- CNG has grown into one
of the major fuel sources used in car engines in Pakistan, Bangladesh
and India. The use of CNG is mandated for the public transport system of
New Delhi, India's capital city as well as mega city Ahmadabad in the
state of Gujarat. The Delhi Transport Corporation operates the world's
largest fleet of CNG buses. The government of Punjab, Pakistan, the most
populous province of that country, has mandated that all
public-transport vehicles will use CNG by 2007.
- Natural gas can be used
to fuel almost any kind of vehicle - motorcycles and three wheelers,
cars, vans & pickups, lift trucks, buses, trucks, trains, boats,
even aircraft.
- The demand for CNG
vehicles is expected to grow given the firm oil prices, lower running
cost and rising environmental concerns. The Supreme Court's decision
mandating the use of CNG as auto fuel for heavy vehicles in New Delhi
has created a demand for such cylinders by both OEMs (original equipment
manufacturers) and retrofitters (conversion agents).
- Globally, an estimated
6 million vehicles run on natural gas which is expected to grow to 50
million by 2020. The major export markets are Argentina, Brazil
Pakistan, Iran and China. India could account for around 15% of the
global natural gas market. Demand for CNG cylinders has been growing at
over 40% for the last three years. There is a huge mismatch in the
demand-supply of CNG cylinders, which augurs well for the existing
players.
- Demand for CNG
cylinders will be driven by the conversion of existing petrol &
diesel vehicles to CNG cylinders. The other demand will be from the new
vehicles in select cities such as Delhi, Mumbai and other 11 cities
which are making it mandatory for vehicles to switch over to CNG from
diesel / petrol that they may be using presently
