  • The Pomegranate, Punica granatum, is a species of fruit - bearing deciduous shrub or small tree growing to 5-8 m tall.
  • The genus Punica only has two species: P. granatum L. and P. Nana L., the former mainly cultivated for its fruit and occasionally as an ornamental tree, and the latter only ornamentally as its fruits are inedible.
  • The origin of the pomegranate tree is the Mediterranean basin and the Middle East.
  • The fruit is a fleshy berry denominated balausta, thick-skinned, complex, enclosed by the thallus, with various polyspermal cavities separated by tenuous membranous partitions.
  • Pomegranates are a great source of natural antioxidants, which can play a big part in keeping your cardiovascular system pumping efficiently.
  • Pomegranates are high in polyphenols. The most abundant polyphenols in pomegranate are hydrolysable tannins, particularly punicalagins.
  • The bark of the pomegranate tree may be used as a very strong laxans (purgative), but it has several serious side-effects.
  • One medium apple-sized pomegranate provides about 105 calories. 

  • It has 26 grams carbohydrate, is a good source of potassium  has some vitamin C (9 milligrams) and fiber (0.9 grams) as well as small amounts of several other vitamins and minerals.

  • The EU, mostly the UK, is the main market for fresh separated pomegranate arils at the price of 10& per Kg.

  • Juice prices are very high since it is a gourmet product at the lowest level of US$ 5 per litter.
