  • Polyvinyl acetate is a thermoplastic polymer with a
    chemical formula of (C4H6O2)n
  • Poly(vinyl acetate) may be polymerized by bulk, solution, suspension, or emulsion techniques. Commercially, emulsion polymerization is the predominant method.
  • Vinyl acetate is one of the most important organic chemical raw materials. It is mainly used to synthesize polyvinyl acetate, which is then turned into polyvinyl alcohol (PVOH) by alcoholysis
  • Polyvinyl acetate (PVAc)  is basically manufactured in water dispersible form
  • The process involves the reaction of monomer molecules of vinyl acetate by submerging them into water. This results in the formation of a polyvinyl acetate emulsion that is milky white in color. The emulsion fluid can then instantly be processed as a polyvinyl acetate polymer in products comprising the PVAc as a constituent element.
  • When PVAc is incorporated into emulsion coatings and adhesives, it is normally converted to polyvinyl alcohol first, which is a water-soluble polymer. This is done by means of partial hydrolysis. On a lesser level, it is also used as a protective coating for cheese to render it safe from humidity and fungi.
  • The degree of polymerization of polyvinyl acetate typically is 100 to 5000. The ester groups of the polyvinyl acetate are sensitive for alkali and will slowly convert PVAc into polyvinyl alcohol and acetic acid.
  • Main uses are in paints, adhesives, paper coatings and textiles
  • In the CIS, only four countries are turning out PVA dispersion: Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, and Kazakhstan. The overall capacity for manufacturing this product makes up 77,400 tons/year
