- Sodium silicate is the generic name for a series of compounds
derived from soluble sodium silicate glasses. They are water solutions
of sodium oxide (Na2O)
and silicon dioxide (SiO2) combined in
various ratios. Varying the proportions of SiO2 to Na2O and the solids
content results in solutions with differing properties that have many
diversified industrial applications.
- Sodium silicate possesses excellent binding, adhesive, bleaching and
sizing properties. Thus, it is extensively used in the manufacture of
detergents, silica gel, cardboard, paper, textiles, paints, adhesives,
pottery, sanitary ware, refractories, foundry and wood processing
industries. Sodium silicate is available in two primary grades: neutral
and alkaline. Materials of both these grades are available either in
liquid or solid form.
- Sodium silicate solutions of widely
varying ratios are used for makingmany kinds of cement, including types
for acid-proof construction, refractoryuses, and binding thermal insulating
materials.
- Sodium silicates have long been thestabilizer of choice for hydrogen peroxide
bleaching of cellulose
- The Pulp & Paper Industry, where
they brighten both soft and hardwood
pulps. They are used mainly with
mechanical ground-wood pulps to
upgrade newsprint stock, and withwhiter goods such as toweling, napkins, magazine stock and better
quality printing papers.
- Many detergent operations are
performed using both the liquid and
dry granular forms of sodium silicates.
- Another application of the gel-formingproperties of sodium silicate is in thefoundry industry.
- Manufacture of sodium silicate and related products like
precipitated silica are reserved for small scale.
