Information
Profile @ a Glance
- Aleuritic Acid (9, 10, 16 Trihydroxy palmitic acid), the Main
Constituent Acid of Shellac, is a Unique Acid due to the Relative
Position of its Hydroxyl Group.
- It is an Excellent Starting Material for the Synthesis of Various
Macrocyclic Perfumes like Ambrettolide, Iso-ambrettolide, civetone,
exaltone and many more.
- Aleuritic acid is a potential substitute for alpha-hydroxy acids and
is valued for its antioxidant action on the skin.
- It is isolated from the resin and mainly used in the perfumery
industry, as a starting material for the preparation of "musk" aroma
compounds as well as medicinal and bioactive compounds.
- Aleuritic Acid is isolated from shellac by saponification and
several separation and filtration steps.
- Recently, aleuritic acid has
been proposed as a substitute
for alpha-hydroxy acids, which are widely used in skin care
formulations.
- The lac
production had reached 32,100 tons one year. India possesed 89% of lac production
and ranked the first in the world, Thailand and China are ranked the
second and the third, respectively.
