Project Profile @ a   glance

  • Butyl rubber was first developed in the 1940’s by German chemists and commercialized in 1943.
  • The typical composition of butyl rubber is approximately 98% polyisobutylene, with the balance being isoprene. The isoprene units contain a double bond that provides a site for cross linking during vulcanization and are located randomly in the polymer chain.
  • Polyisobutylene (in the form of polyisobutylene succinimide) has interesting properties when used as an additive in lubricating oils and motor fuels.
  • Polyisobutylene added in small amounts to the lubricating oils used in machining results in a significant reduction in the generation of oil mist and thus reduces the operator's inhalation of oil mist.
  • Regular butyl is the preferred material for inner tubes, which are manufactured in various sizes from lightweight bicycles to lifestyle bicycles, and from day-use motorcycles to luxury motorcycles. The most important property of butyl rubber is that it is the best sealant of all the known rubbers.
  • Halo butyl rubber is mainly used for tire inner liner compounds, because of its low air permeability. Bromobutyl is superior to Chlorobutyl, but is more expensive. The halogen radical permits the rubber to bond to the other elasomers in the carcass compound.
  • Inner tubes for automotive, bus, and truck tires are typically made of butyl rubber because of butyl rubber's outstanding resistance to air permeability.
  • Butyl rubbers are used in tyre inner tubes and other products that require a good barrier against gases. The thermal stability of these rubbers makes them suitable for use in automotive radiator hoses. Butyl rubber can be used in formulations for adhesive for transparent tape, hot melt pressure sensitive adhesives, mastic for pipe wrap tape and vinyl floor tile adhesives. Butyl rubber can also be used for semi-conducting electrical splicing tape.
  • LANXESS is a leading producer of butyl rubber which is used in a wide range of applications. The butyl market will grow over the next 15 years and LANXESS expansions will be needed.
  • Timothy Rae, Bayer Polymers' head of regional product management for polybutadiene rubber and butyls, says slow growth has combined with a 1990s capacity buildup, particularly in Asia, to create intense oversupply in synthetic rubber, and producers are cutting back production to adjust.
