- India's stainless steel production
stands at
around 3.3 million tonnes for the last several years.
- Jindal Stainless Ltd is one of the
largest stainless steel manufacturers in
the country
- The share of Chinese flat stainless
steel products into the country had risen to
30%. In a partial relief to domestic industry which has been reeling
under severe
under utilization of capacity, the government increased import
duty on flat rolled products from 5 per cent to 7.5%.
- According to reputed consultants, The
stainless steel wire rod market increased from 1,200 kt in 2000 to 2,240
kt in 2014. This corresponds to a growth level of 4.2% p.a. A sharp
decline was recorded in 2009 along the global economic recession, but in
the following years the market recovered to reach new record levels.
Between 2014 and 2020 the market is expected to grow by 3.0% p.a. with
China and India as the main contributors. Growth in Europe and America
will stagnate.
- Asia and India (included in Other Countries) will continue to be the
growth drivers in the future whilst demand in Europe and America is
expected to stagnate.
- Half of the wire rod is used for redrawing into stainless
steel wire. Over a quarter is
used for the production of fasteners, and the rest for the production of
bright bars and
other applications
- Stainless steel Bars are produced in straight lengths and are
either hot or cold rolled.
- Approximately fifty percent of stainless steel products such as
coils, sheets, bars etc are
marketed in India through traders, whilst the balance is marketed
directly by the manufacturers of the products
- Large end users tend to purchase directly from the manufacturers,
whilst small and medium enterprises procure through the traders of
stainless steel.
- In India the distribution channels are fragmented and the products
do not travel in a seamless manner before reaching the end user. This is
due to the fact there are large product ranges, often small
requirements, large distances betw een the producer and end user and
that there are several different players involved, which results in a
complicated distribution network.
