- Thailand is the
world's largest producer of pineapple, and largest exporter of
canned pineapple juice, satisfying 54% of the world demand
- In general, the
pineapple value chain begins with farmer producers (who
produces, harvest, pack, load and transport the produce to the
road side markets). From thereon the produce
flows to aggregators/traders (who procure and trade pine apple
in fresh form) and to the cottage/small processors(who procure
the fresh pineapple stock either directly from producer or
through traders).
The processors process the product to develop products such as
squashes, jams and RTE/RTS products (juices/candies)
- Pineapple is
mainly grown in southern part of Thailand
- The pineapple
isprocessed in local area in Thailand as it can reduce
transportation cost and time. This supply chain also can bring
revenue in the local people. Moreover, a strategy of ministry of
agricultural and cooperatives in year 2010-2014 had supported to
developcropping, processing and exporting pineapple sustainably.
In preliminary data, the supplier performance is quite low as
theyface uncertainty yield and price of fresh pineapple in each
year. This should be improved to meet requirement of ministry of
agricultural and cooperatives.
- Several efforts
have been made in order to utilize pineapple wastes obtained
from different sources. The post-harvest processing of pineapple
fruits yields skins, crowns, and waste from fresh trimmings and
the pomace after extracting the juice. Several studies have been
carried out and researchers trying to explore the possibility of
using these wastes and attention have been given on the
utilization of pineapple waste primarily for extraction of
bromelain enzyme and secondarily as low-cost raw material for
the production of vinegar, anti-oxidants, fiber and animal feed
production.
