- Ketamine hydrochloride,
or "Special K," is a powerful hallucinogen widely used as an animal
tranquilizer by veterinarians. Users sometimes call the high caused by
Special K, "K hole," and describe profound hallucinations that include
visual distortions and a lost sense of time, sense, and identity.
- Ketamine is a
dissociative anesthetic developed in 1963 to replace PCP and currently
used in human anesthesia and veterinary medicine. Much of the ketamine
sold on the street has been diverted from veterinarians' offices.
- Ketamine's chemical
structure and mechanism of action are similar to those of PCP Ketamine
hydrochloride ("Special K" or "K") was originally created for use as a
human anaesthetic.
- Ketamine belongs to a
class of drugs called "dissociative anaesthetics," which separate
perception from sensation. Other drugs in this category include PCP, DXM
and nitrous oxide (laughing gas).
- Product resulting from
grignard reaction involving o-chlorobenzonitrile &
bromocyclopentane is treated in presence of strong alkali to form epoxy
cmpd. Reaction of this with methylamine yields imine which rearranges on
heating in presence of hcl.
- Use of ketamine to
treat severe cancer pain. The physiologic effects of the use of
Telazol-ketamine-xylazine on feral cats in a large-volume spay and
neuter clinic.
- The use of ketamine
hydrochloride as an anesthetic for raccoons. Ketamine continues to be
used extensively in children and for short-term anaesthesia and
analgesia in-patients with burns.
- In veterinary
anesthesia, ketamine is often used for its anaesthetic and analgesic
effects on cats, dogs, rabbits, rats, and other small animals.
Veterinarians often use ketamine with sedative drugs to produce balanced
anaesthesia and analgesia, and as a constant rate infusion to help
prevent pain wind-up. Ketamine is used to manage pain among large
animals, though it has less effect on bovines.
- The effect of ketamine
on the respiratory and circulatory systems is different from that of
other anaesthetics. When used at anaesthetic doses, it will usually
stimulate rather than depress the circulatory system. It is sometimes
possible to perform ketamine anaesthesia without protective measures to
the airways.
- Ketamine is sold in
either powdered or liquid form. In powdered form, its appearance is
similar to that of pharmaceutical grade cocaine and can be insufflated
(referred to as a "SPECIAL K"), injected, or placed in beverages.
- There are three main
types of ketamine infusion techniques currently being performed on RSD /
CRPS patients for the relief of their pain and allodynia symptoms.
- Propofol-fentanyl-midazolam combination is found to be far
superior to propofol-pethidine-midazolam and ketamine-midazolam
combinations in respect to haemodynamic stability, oxygenation, shifting
to PACU, incidence of complications and discharge readiness.
- Ketamine has been
recommended as an alternative to thiopental sodium for the induction of
general anesthesia in patients undergoing elective cesarean section.
Compared to thiopental sodium induction, ketamine induction yields a
significantly lower intraoperative maternal awareness and better
neonatal outcome.
- According to the survey
, 1329 users (14.8% of respondents) had tried ketamine, the vast
majority on an experimental or occasional basis, with 279 individuals
(3%) claiming to use occasionally or more often. The proportion of users
each year is relatively stable between a low of 13.0%, and a high of
18.4% in the smaller in the corresponding year. Similarly current use
remains relatively stable at 2-3%.
