- Diketene is an
organic compound formed by dimerization of ketene. Diketene is a member
of the oxetane family. It is used as a chemical reagent in organic
chemistry. It is a colorless liquid and heating regenerates the ketene
monomer.
- According to
statistics, China has 22 diketene producers with an annual capacity of
more than 20 000 tons and an output of 12 600 tons. The biggest producer
is Nantong Acetic Acid Chemical Plant having an annual output of around
2 500 tons and more than 20 varieties of derivatives. Quite a few
pharmaceutical and pesticide plants have set up diketene units to
produce derivatives for their own use. There has been a great increase
in these two years in both varieties and quantities of diketene series.
The domestic demand of diketene today is estimated to be around 10 000
tons, 50% to the pharmaceutical industry and 40% to the pesticide
industry.
- China usually
produces diketene from acetic acid, and also from ketone, acetic
anhydride and acetic easter by thermal decomposition. Thermal
decomposition of ketone can be used in small-sized production units, and
methane is produced as byproduct. The process is rather complicated. The
purity of ketene gas produced by this process is low and residual ketone
has to be removed.
- The diketene content
of the first class industrial product is more than 95%. 1 746 kg of
acetic acid and 7.8 kg of triethyl
- The global output of
diketene is around 100 000 tons a year today. Major producers include
UCC, Eastman and FMC of the United States, Hoechst of Germany, Celanese
of Britain, Lonza of Switzerland and Synthetic Chemical Industry, Daicel
Chemical Industry and Teijin Shoji Co., Ltd. of Japan.
- China has more than
20 diketene producers. The total capacity was around 20 000 t/n and the
output was around 16 000 tons in 2000. The biggest producer is Nantong
Acetic Acid Plant that was constructed with the technology introduced
from Italy in 1998. Other large producers include Shandong
