  • Glutaraldehyde is a colourless liquid with a pungent odor used to sterilize medical and dental equipment. It is also used for industrial water treatment and as a chemical preservative. However, it is toxic, causing severe eye, nose, throat and lung irritation, along with headaches, drowsiness and dizziness.
  • Glutaraldehyde is an oily liquid at room temperature (density 1.06 g/mL), and miscible with water, alcohol, and benzene. It is used as a tissue fixative in electron microscopy. It is employed as embalming fluid, is a component of leather tanning solutions, and occurs as an intermediate in the production of certain industrial chemicals. Glutaraldehyde is frequently used in biochemistry applications as an amine-reactive homobifunctional crosslinker.
  • An isomer of glutaraldehyde has recently been developed by Seachem Laboratories, Inc. as a fertilizer for aquatic plants by providing a source of organic carbon. It is marketed under the name Flourish Excel. Monomeric glutaraldehyde can polymerize by aldol condensation reaction yielding alpha, beta unsaturated poly-glutaraldehyde. This reaction usually occurs at alkaline pH values.
  • Glutaraldehyde solution of 0.1 to 1.0% concentration may be used for system disinfection and as a preservative for long term storage.Some of gluteraldehyde's additional uses are in Electron Microscopy. It is used to fix specimen like bacteria, plant material, human blood cells etc. to make it ready for electron microscopy. It kills cells extremely quickly. This is usually done before the dehydration process.
  • Glutaraldehyde is frequently confused with formaldehyde. Although glutaraldehyde and formaldehyde share the chemical family name “aldehyde,” their chemical and toxicological properties are significantly different. Glutaraldehyde does not contain formaldehyde, nor does it release formaldehyde, even after prolonged storage under adverse conditions. Glutaraldehyde is not covered by any governmental formaldehyde-release standards or restrictions, thus formaldehyde-related requirements are not applicable to glutaraldehyde users.
  • Exposure to glutaraldehyde liquid or vapour has been known to cause a range of health problems (1) (2) including: irritation of the eyes, nose and throat, skin sensitisation and occupational asthma (3). The use of glutaraldehyde therefore has potential cost implications in terms of staff health and sick leave, litigation and workforce compensation (4). Recommendations set out by the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) state that glutaraldehyde exposure should be controlled to a maximum limit of 0.05 ppm. 
  • The Dow Chemical Company, the manufacturer of the glutaraldehyde raw material used in the manufacture of most glutaraldehyde solutions worldwide, has recommended reducing the ceiling limit for glutaraldehyde vapors from 0.2 ppm to 0.1 ppm in order to provide an improved margin of safety from the irritating effects of glutaraldehyde.
  • Glutaraldehyde is most frequently used as a cold liquid high-level disinfectant for heat-sensitive equipment such as dialysis instruments; surgical instruments;  suction bottles; bronchoscopes; endoscopes; and ear, nose, and throat instruments.
