  • Cleaning means washing clothes, other textiles and leather products using solvents or detergents, in their original forms. It is classified roughly into dry cleaning with organic solvents and laundry with water. The dry cleaning process is a process for removing dirt, stain, soil, etc. on textile products with organic solvents and detergents.
  • Dry cleaning is any cleaning process for clothing and textiles using an organic solvent other than water -- generally known as dry cleaning fluid, and typically this is tetrachloroethylene. Dry cleaning is necessary for cleaning items which would otherwise be damaged by water and soap or detergent. It may also be sought if washing by hand.
  • The modern solvents used in dry cleaning are perchloroethylene, high flash point hydrocarbons , modified hydrocarbons blends , glycol ethers , cyclic silicone decamethylcyclopentasiloxane and liquid CO2 . Dry cleaning is a chemical-dependent operation. Each type of dry cleaning uses a blend of chemicals, detergents, and additives for cleaning. Spot or stain-removal operations are also heavily chemical dependent.
  • Dry-cleaning operations generate wastes and emissions from many sources. Residuals from industrial dry-cleaning operations may also contain various aromatic and chlorinated solvents, oils and greases, and other hazardous materials from the rags and clothing cleaned. Mask cleaning has always been a challenge for the semi-conductor industry mainly because of the mask material susceptibility to the chemistry applied. Nonetheless, the industry was able to successfully develop wet cleans based on sulfuric and ammonia chemistry with good cleaning efficiencies and minimum impact on the mask optical properties.
  • A novel dry cleaning technology has been developed by GaSonics, which was successfully applied to post etch residue removal. Densified Fluid Cleaning (DFC) is a dry source, liquid mode cleaning technology. It is based on application of densified gases at elevated pressures and low temperatures. When used together with microwave downstream plasma treatments, DFC enables the damagefree removal of heavy post etch residues, containing Al, Ti or Cu, not readily affected by other wafer cleaning methods.
  • One of the troubles in dry cleaning is color patch occurrence. It doesn't usually happen during cleaning but in drying, through transfer of colorants and residue left on fabric. In short, colorants that have less affinity to fabric shift through evaporation of the solvent then are left on the spot, thereby producing a color patch.
  • People in big cities are now inclined to use more sophisticated measures to cleaning their clothes. These people range from middle class to upper class. The major target market for the dry cleaning services will depend on the location where dry cleaning business is situated. The target customers for proposed business will not only be general public but also the commercial sector i.e. hostels, catering companies, film industry and hospitals.
  • The new regulations and dry-cleaning processes have prompted a new crop of dry-cleaning start-ups that provide a more environmentally-friendly approach to dry-cleaning. The trend for U.S. consumers to spend less on dry-cleaning because of environmental concerns and changes in workplace dress will continue to impact the dry-cleaning industry.
  • The drycleaning industry is very fragmented. The International Fabricare Institute reports that approximately 30,000 dry-cleaning businesses currently operate in the U.S. today, employing 200,000 people.
