Project at a Glance Contents on the CD ROM
  • High-density crosslinked polyethylene or XLPE is a Thermoset resin that is specifically designed for critical applications like chemical storage.
  • Crosslinking polyethylene changes the polymer from a thermoplastic to a
    thermoelastic polymer.
  • Once a material is  fully crosslinked, polyethylene tends not to melt but merely to become more flexible at higher temperatures.
  • Properties of PEX are improved heat resistance, chemical and oxidation resistance, low
temperature strength and long term strength at elevated temperatures.
  • A flexible, durable, reliable plastic piping product for use in plumbing, residential fire safety and radiant heating & cooling systems.
  • Types of Polyethylenes which are crosslinked such as Low density polyethylene, high density
    polyethylene and polyolefinic Elastomer.
  • There are two main types of polyethylene cross link: PEX-a and PEX-b.
  • PEX-a or Engel method material is also known
as hot cross linking as the reaction occurs when the polymer is molten. PEX-b or moisture cure method material uses silicon and oxygen atoms to form bridges between the polymer chains.
  • Crosslinking of polyethylene takes place in four stages: initiation, propagation, branching and
    termination.
  • Polyethylene can be crosslinked by silane method used for various interesting applications.
  • Finds applications in packaging and electrical insulation & rotomoulding applications.
  • Widely used in  building services pipe work systems, domestic water piping and insulation for high tension electrical cables. It is also used for natural gas and offshore oil applications, chemical & transportation of sewage and slurries.
