A cactus (plural cactus, cacti, or cactuses) is any member of the succulent plant family Cactaceae. They are often used as ornamental plants, but some are also crop plants.
Cacti are distinctive and unusual plants, which have adapted to arid and hot environments, showing a wide range of anatomical and
physiological features, which conserve water.
Cacti come in a wide range of shapes and sizes. The tallest is Pachycereus pringlei, with a maximum recorded height of 19.2 m, and the smallest is Blossfeldia liliputiana, only about 1 cm diameter at maturity.
Cactus flowers are large, and like the spines and branches arise from
areoles. Many cactus species are night blooming, as they are pollinated by nocturnal insects or small animals, principally moths, bats, and sheep. Cacti's sizes range from small and round to pole-like and tall.
Cacti are relatively easy to grow. Most will tolerate neglect but thrive when given good care. These plants are well-adapted to the dry conditions found in the home. Most cacti grow slowly to moderately as houseplants, usually only a few inches a year. They can live for many years.
In place of leaves, cacti have special organs called areoles. These are like buds and they are arranged regularly along the ribs of the stem or on the tips of tubercles.
They produce spines which help to protect the stems from being eaten by herbivores. In some cacti the spines are so dense that they almost completely obscure the underlying stems, shielding the stems from
intense sunlight and preventing the plant from overheating.
Cactus is used for many things. People plant them round their houses to make a thorny fence. Those living in deserts sometimes use dried up cacti as firewood. Some are used for making medicines and simple home remedies or used as stock feed.
Cochineal is produced by drying and milling adult female Dactylopius coccus Costa, parasitic insects that host on cactus pear pads.
Aphids, spider mites and mealy bugs are the major pests of cacti.
Houseplant insecticide sprays or insecticidal soaps can be used for control.
Cochise pincushion cactus is in the commercial trade and plants or seeds are available from several nursery sources.
Mexico is the only country planting cladodes for commercial use on 10000 ha with a total production of 600000 tons per annum.
The common diseases of cacti stem and root rot. These can be controlled by spraying Dithane Z-78, Dithane M-45 or Blitox.
Phytopharm has now increased capacity at the Pretoria plant to ensure year-round rolling harvesting of the 10 million cacti cultivated on its local plantations.
In India Cactus usually propagated in nursery as one of the several species of ornamental plants. However, in Kalimpong, West Bengal, nurseries of
only cacti have been set up.
Cactus is an important member of the ornamental foliage plants. While there is no estimate for market size of cactus alone, the share of foliage plants is US $ 2.05 billion in the total international floriculture trade of US $ 5.24 billion.
Cacti have always invoked a great interest from the moment when the first explorers of the New World introduced them into Europe. These plants are now threatened by habitat destruction and fragmentation and modification caused by human activities and various environmental phenomena.
Yucca, a member of the succulents, is one of the top ten foliage plants
traded in the international market. The popularity of Cactus is increasing as an ornamental plant in the Indian gardens, parks and landscapes. The commercial potential of cactus nurseries can therefore be rated as high.
