  • An alcoholic beverage is a drink containing ethanol. Ethanol is a psychoactive drug, a depressant, and many societies regulate or restrict its sale and consumption. Countries place various legal restrictions on the sale of alcoholic drinks to young people. The manufacture and consumption of alcohol is notably found (to some degree) in most cultures and societies around the world, from hunter-gatherer tribes to organized nation-states. The consumption of alcohol is often important at social events in such societies and may be an important aspect of a community's culture.
  • Distilled spirits (or, simply, spirits or liquors) are the ALCOHOL-containing fluids (ethanol, also called ethyl alcohol) obtained via distillation of fermented juices from plants. These juices include wines, distillates of which are termed brandies. The most commonly used plants are sugarcane, potatoes, sugar beets, corn, rye, rice, and barley; various fruits such as grapes, peaches, and apples are also used. Flavors may be added to provide distinctive character.
  • Vodka is one of the world's most consumed distilled beverages. It is typically a colorless liquid containing ethanol purified by distillation from a fermented substance such as grain. The word is the diminutive of "water" in various Slavic languages. Except for various types of flavorings, vodka consists of water and alcohol (ethanol). It usually has an alcohol content ranging from 35% to 50% by volume.
  • Vodka consumed in sufficient amounts, as any alcoholic beverage, can cause dehydration, digestive irritation and other symptoms associated with a hangover because these are inherent properties of ethanol, even if to a lesser degree than the methanol, fusel oils, and other alcohols which are absent in pure vodka. In some countries, black-market vodka or "bathtub" vodka is widespread, as it can be produced easily to avoid taxation. However, severe poisoning, blindness, or death can occur as a result of impurities, notably methanol presence.
  • Vodka, Russia’s traditional drink, is still very much the leader in sales, both by volume and value. In 2004, vodka sales accounted for nearly $10.2 billion. In spite of a three percent drop in volume in the last couple of years, vodka still accounts for over 90 percent of spirits sales.
